About river jobs

Boatmasters, helmsmen, deckhands, engineers and the hotel and galley crew of river cruise ships are all advertised here, each advert with its vessel type, its contract length and its wage and, where the company gives it, the joining date. River work often runs by the season, or in rotations of a couple of weeks on and off, and the advert says which.

Inland waterways have their own qualifications - a boatmaster’s licence, a radar endorsement, a service record book, a dangerous-goods certificate on tankers - and they are not the same as an STCW certificate of competency. Where an advert asks for a particular one, check it against your papers before you apply.
